Discover how students from ages six to sixteen collaborate at The Kumon Student Design Weekend to create Coaching, Communication, and Motivation Cards.

We aren't just making pretty cards; we’re creating a tactical manual for the psychological game of long-term learning.

The Kumon Student Design Weekend is a hands-on educational strategy event where students ranging from ages six to sixteen gather to design their own learning tools. Instead of following a top-down approach, this student-led design initiative empowers learners to become creators. Participants work together over an overnight weekend to develop specific products that support their academic growth and help them visualize their long-term progress throughout their educational journey.
During the event, students focus on developing three distinct products: Kumon Coaching Cards, Communication Pot-Garden Cards, and Motivation Cards. These tools are designed to help students navigate their learning process more effectively. By involving the kids in the design process, the program ensures that the tools are practical and relevant to their needs, helping them stay engaged with their studies from foundational levels through advanced calculus.
The Kumon journey is viewed as a construction project where early levels, such as counting or basic addition, serve as the concrete foundation. If the foundation has cracks, the entire structure is at risk. By participating in the design weekend, students see the vision of the finished house, which helps them understand why repetitive worksheets are necessary. This perspective prevents discouragement during the more difficult framing stages of their education.
The weekend is designed for a wide range of participants, including six-year-olds who are just learning to count and sixteen-year-olds tackling complex calculus. This diverse age group allows students at different stages of their Kumon journey to collaborate on tools that benefit everyone. By bringing together learners from various levels, the event fosters a comprehensive environment where the foundation and the advanced stages of learning are both represented.
