The fantasy framework assimilates contradictory evidence by reinterpreting it as further confirmation. Breaking the power of ideology therefore requires not simply showing "how things really are" but confronting the traumatic Real of desire that fantasy conceals.
The psychoanalytic process of "going through the fantasy" parallels proper ideological critique. It doesn't mean discovering that behind the fantasy is nothing-rather, it means experiencing this nothing as such, recognizing the void that fantasy attempts to fill. The symptom thus functions as a kind of temporal knot, where past, present, and future become inextricably intertwined in ways that defy simple chronological ordering.

Jews were chosen as racism's primary object precisely because the Jewish God embodies the purest form of "Che vuoi?"-the terrifying abyss of the Other's desire that cannot be represented. This pattern repeats in contemporary political discourse, where various groups are assigned the role of the suspicious Other whose desires must be contained through fantasy constructions. We see similar mechanisms at work in xenophobia, islamophobia, and other forms of political othering, where complex social problems are reduced to narratives about the threatening desires of an Other.

Rather, Hegel argues that Kant remains trapped in representational thinking by still positing a positive Thing-in-itself beyond phenomena. Before we intervene in reality through particular acts, we must accomplish the purely formal act of converting objective reality into "effectivity"-something produced by the subject.
The primordial human act exemplifying this logic is the funeral ritual, where we pretend that natural death results from our free decision. Through symbolization, the subject confers the form of a free act on what happens anyway through natural necessity.
What distinguishes the absolute subject is merely an empty gesture-a pure feigning through which the subject assumes responsibility for what happens anyway. This empty gesture is what Lacan calls the signifier, the elementary act of symbolization. This explains why in Hegelian dialectics everything has already happened; all that occurs is a formal change through which we acknowledge what has always been.
The subject is precisely this "empty gesture" that changes nothing at the level of content but must be added for the content to achieve full effectivity-like the paradoxical last grain that makes a heap, superfluous yet necessary. The Monarch in Hegel's political philosophy embodies this function perfectly: he merely "dots the i's" by formally adding his signature to decrees, contributing nothing but the pure form of subjectivity.

The Phallic Signifier: Transcendental Limitation as Power
The phallic signifier exemplifies the paradox of formal conversion, representing a complex intersection of control, limitation, and power. St. Augustine positioned sexuality not as original sin but as punishment for it, marking a crucial theological distinction that shaped Western thought. The phallus represents the uncontrollable part of man's body that escapes his will-God's punishment for human pride. While man can master other bodily functions through conscious control and training - from breathing to muscle movement - erection remains stubbornly beyond direct voluntary control, highlighting human limitation.

This "empty gesture" that transforms seemingly senseless reality into our own meaningful work represents the most elementary ideological operation-it posits the big Other and makes it exist through our recognition and engagement.
