The Orient was not "Orientalized" because it possessed certain inherent characteristics but because Western powers could make it Oriental through domination. Its treatment of "Mohammed" is particularly revealing - defining him as "the famous impostor Mahomet, Author and Founder of a heresy which has taken the name of religion." Through this encyclopedic format, Mohammed is transformed from a potentially threatening figure who "roams the Eastern world" into a contained character, neatly categorized and confined to his designated portion of the Orientalist stage.
The Bibliotheque powerfully demonstrates Orientalism's disciplinary power - forcing Western readers to pass through carefully constructed "learned grids and codes" to access any knowledge of the Orient. This creates a complex three-way force affecting the Orient itself, the Orientalist scholar, and the Western consumer of Oriental knowledge. Through this process, the Orient becomes thoroughly "Orientalized," with truth becoming primarily a function of learned Western judgment rather than the material itself. The Orient thus appears to owe its very existence to the Orientalist, who continuously converts it "from something into something else" - a process that became increasingly schematic and rigid over time.
European knowledge of Islam and the East, rather than growing more accurate with increased contact and scholarship, paradoxically became more distorted - Western ignorance became "more refined and complex." Napoleon's genius was in turning this textual knowledge into tactical advantage - declaring to Egyptians "nous sommes les vrais musulmans," using Orientalist scholars to manage native contacts, and manipulating Islamic leaders to interpret the Koran in favor of the French army.
From the Napoleonic expedition emerged the monumental Description de l'Egypte and numerous textual offspring - from Chateaubriand's Itineraire to Flaubert's Salammbo and Lane's Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians. These works shared not only their background in Oriental legend but their reliance on the Orient as a generative womb, producing highly stylized simulacra rather than authentic representations.
Beyond artistic works, the expedition spawned scientific projects like Renan's linguistic studies and geopolitical ventures like de Lesseps's Suez Canal. The canal's opening ceremonies featured grandiose speeches celebrating the "rapprochement" of Orient and Occident under Western guidance. This refusal represents his literal disengagement from Oriental society - he abolishes himself as human subject while preserving authoritative identity as observer.

Nineteenth-century pilgrims to the Orient encountered complex layers of preconception that fundamentally shaped their perceptions and representations. The accumulation of Orientalist knowledge followed a distinctive pattern of scholarly inheritance and transformation. Rather than building primarily from direct observation, Orientalists created an intricate web of cross-references: Richard Burton's Egypt was viewed through Lane's lens; Gerard de Nerval's observations were colored by Alphonse de Lamartine's accounts; Lamartine himself was deeply influenced by Chateaubriand. This created a self-referential system where new observations were constantly measured against established authorities. Even when confronted with contradictory evidence, scholars typically adjusted their findings to fit existing paradigms rather than challenging fundamental assumptions.
Nerval and Gustave Flaubert represented a significant evolution in Orientalist perception, bringing sophisticated literary sensibilities to their Eastern encounters. Their romantic training enabled them to approach the Orient with greater psychological complexity, though still through distinctly European eyes. Flaubert's encounters with Egyptian courtesans, particularly Kuchuk Hanem, became powerful symbols in his work, while Nerval's "Voyage en Orient" explored themes of spiritual and personal transformation. Their treatment of Oriental women - from historical figures like Cleopatra to mythological characters like Isis - created complex, if still problematic, representations that went beyond simple exoticism.

These deep-seated beliefs persisted across centuries, informing Western attitudes even when surface-level descriptions evolved.
This latent Orientalism allowed Western writers to view the Orient as requiring Western attention, reconstruction, and redemption. The Orient existed as isolated from European progress in sciences, arts, and commerce, making it an object of specialized Western interest. Writers like James Mill and Lord Cromer consistently portrayed Oriental societies as stagnant and incapable of self-improvement. In the late 19th century, Orientalist ideas easily merged with biological theories of racial inequality, reinforced by "second-order Darwinism" that gave scientific validity to the division between advanced European-Aryan and backward Oriental-African races. Scholars like Ernest Renan and Arthur de Gobineau developed elaborate racial theories that positioned Europeans at the apex of human development.
Orientals were rarely seen as individuals but analyzed as problems to be solved or territories to be conquered. Whether in diplomatic correspondence, academic treatises, or popular literature, they appeared as abstract categories rather than human beings with agency. The designation "Oriental" already contained an evaluative judgment requiring subjection. This approach encouraged a distinctly male conception of the world, with Oriental women typically portrayed as creatures of male power-fantasy - sensual, stupid, and willing, exemplified by Flaubert's Kuchuk Hanem. Similar stereotypes appeared in paintings, novels, and travel accounts, where the "Oriental woman" became a stock character embodying Western sexual fantasies. The Orient was denied development and transformation, frozen in an "immobilized eternality."
By the late nineteenth century, Orientalism had transformed from a textual and contemplative enterprise into an administrative, economic, and military one. Colonial offices produced volumes of reports, surveys, and statistics to manage Oriental populations. This fundamental change was geographical and spatial - Europe's relationship with the "Oriental" space shifted from distant contemplation to intimate possession. While medieval scholars like Dante and d'Herbelot made no claims about their Oriental ideas beyond scholarly tradition, nineteenth-century figures like Lane, Renan, and Burton approached the Orient with a proprietary attitude, combining scholarly expertise with imperial authority. Burton's detailed accounts of his travels, for instance, served both academic and political purposes. The cumulative effect of decades of Western handling turned the Orient from alien into colonial space, with every aspect of Oriental life cataloged, classified, and controlled through Western systems of knowledge and power.

The White Man's Burden: Orientalism as Imperial Mission
Kipling's concept of the "White Man" served as both an idea and reality for many Britons abroad. The physical whiteness of their skin set them apart from natives, but more importantly, they drew upon "a long tradition of executive responsibility towards the colored races." The White Man's mission of "cleaning a land" required coordination between Europeans, backed by the willingness to use force if necessary, all dignified by a sense of intellectual dedication beyond mere profit.
Being a White Man was "a very concrete manner of being-in-the-world" - it meant speaking, behaving, and feeling in prescribed ways. It represented a form of authority before which non-whites (and even whites themselves) were expected to bend, manifested through colonial governments and commercial establishments.
The power of Orientalist generalizations stemmed from their presumed representativeness - "each particle of the Orient told of its Orientalness." An Oriental was first an Oriental and only second a human being. This radical typing gained scientific legitimacy through linguistic classifications (Semitic, Dravidic, Hamitic) which quickly acquired anthropological, psychological, and biological "evidence." Renan's concept of "Semitic," for instance, expanded from linguistic classification into a transtemporal category purporting to predict all "Semitic" behavior based on some pre-existing essence.
A new dialectic emerges when the Oriental expert's role shifts from understanding to making the Orient perform for Western interests. Knowledge of the Orient translates directly into activity, with results generating new currents of thought in the Orient. The Orientalist becomes a figure of Oriental history, indistinguishable from it, its shaper and characteristic sign for the West. T.E. Lawrence exemplifies this transformation - his Seven Pillars of Wisdom presents unmediated expert power, the power to be, briefly, the Orient itself. All events of the Arab Revolt are reduced to Lawrence's experiences, bringing Asia tantalizingly close to the West, only to emphasize the pathetic distance still separating "us" from an Orient destined to bear its foreignness as permanent estrangement.

Modern Orientalism: From Academic Study to Political Instrument
Orientalism has undergone a profound transformation from a purely academic pursuit to an instrumental political tool. The Orientalist scholar has evolved from being a member of a specialized academic guild with established methodological traditions to becoming "the representative man of Western culture." In this new role, the Orientalist embodies the duality of Occidental consciousness as it attempts to comprehend, categorize, and ultimately control Oriental realities through Western frameworks of understanding.
The interwar period (1918-1939) marked a crucial turning point in East-West relations, characterized by increasing tension and complexity. As Oriental societies began asserting their rights to political independence, these movements directly challenged Western assumptions of intellectual authority and imperial dominance. This period saw prominent cultural figures like Paul Valery confidently asserting European cultural superiority, often through metaphors of consumption and digestion. Valery's famous declaration that the West could "digest" Oriental influences drew on classical precedent: "The Greeks and Romans showed us how to deal with the monsters of Asia, how to treat them by analysis, how to extract from them their quintessence." This metaphor of cultural digestion revealed both the West's perceived strength and its underlying anxieties about maintaining cultural dominance.
The fundamental contrast between British and French approaches to Orientalism becomes particularly evident in comparing two influential figures: H.A.R. Gibb and Louis Massignon, who dominated Islamic studies in their respective traditions until the 1960s. Though both scholars were deeply religious men who attempted to apply traditional scholarship to contemporary political realities, their methodological approaches differed significantly. Gibb exemplified the British empirical tradition, maintaining strict separation between what he considered "objective scholarship" and personal intuition. He focused on verifiable historical facts and linguistic analysis, often avoiding speculative interpretation.
Massignon, conversely, operated simultaneously in two distinct but interrelated modes: rigorous academic research and personal spiritual insight. His approach, deeply rooted in French Symbolisme, understood the "esprit humain" (human spirit) as an aesthetic, religious, and historical reality that could not be compartmentalized. His work synthesized diverse intellectual traditions, drawing upon Henri Bergson's philosophy of intuition, Emile Durkheim's sociological methods, Marcel Mauss's anthropological insights, and later incorporated elements from structural linguistics, psychoanalysis, and the emerging New History school.
This methodological divide reflected deeper differences in intellectual traditions. The French approach, exemplified by Massignon, embraced a more holistic and interpretive understanding of Oriental cultures, often seeking to bridge the gap between objective analysis and subjective experience. Orientalism Today: The Persistence of Power
Orientalism flourishes today despite its failures, jargon, racism, and thin intellectual apparatus. Alarmingly, its influence has spread to "the Orient" itself, with Arabic publications filled with second-order analyses of "the Arab mind" and other myths. Orientalism has accommodated itself to new imperialism, its paradigms confirming the continuing imperial design to dominate Asia.
The Arab world has become an intellectual satellite of the United States. Universities in Arab countries follow patterns inherited from colonial powers but with grotesque modern realities: overcrowded classes, overworked faculty, political appointments, virtually no advanced research facilities, and not a single decent library in the entire region. Oriental scholars use American training to feel superior to their own people while remaining mere "native informants" to Western academics.
The Orient's consumerism further reinforces cultural domination. The Arab world is hooked into the Western market system, with oil revenues based in America and oil-rich states becoming huge customers of American exports. This one-sided relationship has produced vast standardization of taste, with Arabs consuming cultural images of themselves created by American media.
Said critiques explanations for this world scene that stress radical distinctions between cultures and civilizations, particularly Samuel Huntington's "clash of civilizations" thesis. He calls this "preposterous," arguing that modern cultural theory recognizes cultures as hybrid, heterogeneous, interrelated and interdependent. He questions how one can speak of "Western civilization" except as an ideological fiction, pointing to the United States as "an enormous palimpsest of different races and cultures."
Despite the persistence of Orientalist frameworks, Said identifies hopeful trends in post-colonial scholarship that challenge essentialist thinking. The "lesser peoples" are no longer silent, with a revolution in consciousness among women, minorities, and marginals affecting mainstream thinking worldwide. Academic disciplines have been transformed through critiques of sources and Eurocentric perspectives, with curricula expanding to include writing by women, non-European artists, and subalterns.
Said's aim in Orientalism was not to eliminate difference but to challenge the notion that difference implies hostility and frozen opposed essences. He called for a new way of conceiving separations that had stimulated generations of hostility and imperial control. While animosities and inequities that sparked his interest in Orientalism still exist, there is now general acceptance that these represent historical experiences whose end may be at hand. The study of human experience has ethical and political consequences. It should be based on concrete human history, not abstract systems. The goal of repeatedly "Orientalizing the Orient" must be avoided. Without "the Orient," scholars might promote human community beyond racial, ethnic, and national distinctions.
