Eoin Colfer was born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1965 and grew up with four brothers in a household shaped by teaching, history, art, and drama. His father was a teacher, historian, and artist, and his mother taught drama, a combination that helps explain the theatrical wit and storytelling energy that later marked his fiction. He began writing as a child, earned his degree from Dublin University, and worked as a primary school teacher before becoming a full-time author. A formative stretch abroad with his wife in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Italy broadened his imaginative range; his first book, Benny and Omar, published in 1998, drew on those experiences.
