Robert Lawrence Stine, né en 1943 à Columbus, dans l'Ohio, est l'auteur à succès de La Maison des morts et une figure légendaire de la littérature d'épouvante pour enfants. Ce récit glaçant a marqué le lancement de l'emblématique série Chair de poule en 1992, mêlant le suspense d'une maison hantée à la terreur des zombies pour captiver les jeunes lecteurs avec des frayeurs adaptées à leur âge.

Avant de devenir un pionnier de l'horreur pour la jeunesse, Stine a travaillé comme auteur humoristique et éditeur chez Scholastic, créant le magazine Bananas et écrivant des livres de blagues sous le pseudonyme de « Jovial Bob Stine ». Sa transition vers l'horreur a débuté avec Blind Date en 1986, suivi par la série au succès massif Peur de la rue (Fear Street).
