Jenny Erpenbeck est la célèbre autrice allemande de Visitation et l'une des voix les plus puissantes de la littérature européenne contemporaine. Née à Berlin-Est en 1967 dans une famille d'écrivains, Erpenbeck façonne des fictions historiques aux strates multiples, explorant les thèmes de la mémoire, du déplacement et du poids du passé.

Visitation suit plusieurs générations habitant une maison au bord d'un lac dans le Brandebourg à travers un siècle d'histoire allemande, de la Première Guerre mondiale à l'après-guerre, créant ce que NPR a appelé « une histoire du siècle vue à travers les objets que nous avons connus et perdus en chemin ».

Avant de devenir écrivaine à plein temps, Erpenbeck a étudié la mise en scène de théâtre au Conservatoire de musique Hanns Eisler et a travaillé comme metteuse en scène d'opéra dans toute l'Europe. Son roman L'Fin des jours a remporté le Independent Foreign Fiction Prize en 2015, tandis que Prendre la fuite a été présélectionné pour le Man Booker International Prize en 2018. En 2024, elle est entrée dans l'histoire en devenant la première autrice allemande à remporter l'International Booker Prize pour Kairos. Ses œuvres ont été traduites dans plus de vingt langues et sont largement considérées comme des lectures essentielles de la littérature allemande contemporaine.
