Roland Gérard Barthes (1915–1980) était un théoricien littéraire français et un pionnier de la sémiotique, surtout connu pour être l'auteur de Mythologies, un recueil d'essais séminal de 1957 disséquant les idéologies cachées au sein de la culture quotidienne.

Figure de proue du structuralisme et du post-structuralisme, Barthes a combiné la critique littéraire, la philosophie et l'analyse culturelle pour exposer comment les médias de masse, la publicité et les rituels sociaux renforcent les normes bourgeoises. Formé à l'Université de Paris, il a ensuite enseigné dans des institutions telles que l'École Pratique des Hautes Études et est devenu le premier titulaire de la chaire de sémiologie littéraire au Collège de France.

Ses œuvres, notamment Le Degré zéro de l'écriture, S/Z et La Chambre claire, ont redéfini l'analyse textuelle en privilégiant l'interprétation du lecteur par rapport à l'intention de l'auteur — un concept central de son essai influent « La Mort de l'auteur ».
