Née à Hartford, dans le Connecticut, en 1962, Collins est la fille d'un officier de l'armée de l'air américaine — une éducation qui a façonné son approche de l'exploration de la guerre, de la survie et de la complexité morale dans la littérature jeunesse. Avant d'écrire des romans, elle a travaillé sur des émissions de télévision pour enfants nommées aux Emmy Awards, notamment Clarissa Explains It All, et a été scénariste en chef pour Clifford's Puppy Days.

Inspiré par Alice au pays des merveilles réimaginé pour un environnement urbain, Gregor le Criquet suit un garçon de 11 ans dans un monde souterrain situé sous la ville de New York, mêlant l'aventure à des thèmes matures tels que le génocide et la guerre biologique — des leçons transmises par son père, historien militaire et vétéran de la guerre du Vietnam.
