Le Héros perdu (2010) est le premier livre de la série Héros de l'Olympe, qui élargit ses célèbres Chroniques du Camp Sang-Mêlé en mélangeant les mythologies grecque et romaine. La percée de Riordan a eu lieu avec Le Voleur de foudre (2005), qui a lancé la série Percy Jackson et les Olympiens.

Il a depuis écrit plusieurs séries basées sur la mythologie, notamment Les Chroniques de Kane (mythologie égyptienne) et Magnus Chase et les Dieux d'Asgard (mythologie nordique). Ses livres se sont vendus à plus de 30 millions d'exemplaires rien qu'aux États-Unis et ont été traduits en 42 langues. Riordan a remporté deux Emmy Awards en tant que co-créateur et producteur exécutif de la série télévisée Percy Jackson sur Disney+.
