Greg Child est l'auteur de Over the Edge: The True Story of Four American Climbers' Kidnap and Escape in the Mountains of Central Asia et un alpiniste ainsi qu'un écrivain d'aventure de renom. Né en Australie en 1957, Child a gravi le K2 (1990) et l'Everest (1995), établissant ainsi son autorité pour documenter des récits de survie extrême. Sa vaste expérience de l'escalade de parois rocheuses nourrit ce récit véridique et poignant de quatre Américains enlevés par des militants islamistes dans les montagnes du Pamir Alai au Kirghizistan en 2000, et de leur calvaire éprouvant de six jours.

Child est l'auteur de plusieurs livres d'alpinisme acclamés, notamment Thin Air: Encounters in the Himalayas et Postcards from the Ledge, lauréat du National Outdoor Book Award.

Ses articles ont été publiés dans Outside, National Geographic et le magazine Climbing. En 1987, il a reçu le prix littéraire de l'American Alpine Club.
