The behavior of a system is often hidden within its internal structure, not just the external forces acting upon it. If you change the elements but keep the interconnections and the purpose, the system keeps doing what it has always done.

In systems thinking, the elements—such as people or buildings—are the least important part of a system's identity. The behavior of a system is primarily driven by its interconnections, which include the rules, information flows, and relationships between parts. If the underlying structure and the system's purpose remain the same, new individuals will eventually produce the same results as their predecessors because they are operating within the same "rules of the game."
The bathtub principle is a way to understand stocks and flows. A "stock" is the amount of something you can measure at a given time, like water in a tub, while "flows" are the inflows and outflows, like the faucet and the drain. Stocks act as buffers that provide stability but also create time lags. Because a stock changes slowly over time through its flows, you cannot see immediate results from a change in behavior, such as starting a diet or reducing carbon emissions; the existing stock has built-in momentum that must be managed.
Balancing loops act as stabilizers that seek to maintain a specific goal or status quo, much like a thermostat or the human body's temperature regulation. They "push back" against change to keep the system healthy. Reinforcing loops are engines of growth or decline that create "vicious" or "virtuous" cycles where a change leads to even more change in the same direction, such as compound interest or population growth. While reinforcing loops drive expansion, they eventually hit limits imposed by balancing loops.
Leverage points are specific spots within a system where a small shift can produce a massive change. While most people focus on "numbers" like interest rates or quotas, these are actually the least effective places to intervene. Higher-leverage points include changing the flow of information to make it more visible, or changing the rules of the system. The most powerful leverage points of all are paradigms—the unstated assumptions and mindsets that dictate the system's goals and purpose.
A system's true purpose is often hidden and can only be discovered by watching its actual behavior over time rather than listening to what the people within the system claim. For example, if a government states its purpose is education but consistently prioritizes prison spending over school budgets, the system's revealed purpose is something other than education. Understanding a system requires looking at what it actually does and how its various "sub-purposes" might be in conflict with one another.
