Explore the rise of the Vasa Dynasty, from the Stockholm Bloodbath and the end of the Kalmar Union to Gustav Vasa’s transformation of the Swedish monarchy.

The struggle between the Vasa sons was essentially the birth pains of the modern Swedish state, a process of a nation defining its borders, its religion, and its future.
This fight for power between the Wasa sons

Gustav Vasa, originally known as Gustav Eriksson, was a young nobleman who rose to prominence following the Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520. After the Danish King Christian II executed numerous Swedish nobles, Gustav gathered troops from the northwest to fight a war of liberation. His victory ended the Kalmar Union and led to his election as King in 1523, marking the beginning of a new era for an independent Sweden.
The Stockholm Bloodbath was a pivotal historical event in 1520 where King Christian II of Denmark executed dozens of Swedish nobles. This mass execution occurred while Sweden was still part of the crumbling Kalmar Union with Denmark and Norway. The event served as a massive shift in Swedish history, prompting Gustav Eriksson to lead a rebellion that eventually established the Vasa Dynasty and secured Swedish independence.
Under Gustav Vasa, the Swedish crown underwent a fundamental transformation from an elective position to a hereditary one. In 1544, Gustav declared the monarchy hereditary, ensuring that the throne would remain within his family line rather than being subject to election. While this move established Sweden as a significant power player, it also created intense brotherly rivalries and family drama among his sons that lasted for decades.
