Their reign represents a significant era in Celtic folklore, establishing the first high kingship and dividing the island into its traditional five provinces before the arrival of subsequent groups.
The relationship between the Fir Bolg and the Tuatha Dé Danann is a central conflict in Irish mythology. When the Tuatha Dé Danann arrived in Ireland, they demanded half of the land, which the Fir Bolg refused. This led to the historic First Battle of Mag Tuired. Despite their brave resistance, the Fir Bolg were defeated, marking the end of their sovereignty and the beginning of the era of the Tuatha Dé Danann as the dominant supernatural rulers.
The Lebor Gabála Érenn is the primary source for the history and legends of the Fir Bolg. This medieval collection of poems and prose narratives chronicles the various waves of migrations to ancient Ireland. It details the Fir Bolg's journey from enslavement in Greece, where they were forced to carry bags of earth—giving them their name—to their eventual return and establishment of social order and legal structures on the island.
