    Preguntas frecuentes

The term refers to a period in Irish history from approximately 800 BC to 400 AD where physical evidence of daily life was remarkably scarce. Unlike the preceding Bronze Age, which left behind clear burials and farmsteads, the Iron Age population seemed to disappear from the archaeological record. For decades, researchers struggled to find where these people lived, leading to the nickname the 'invisible people' who seemingly only left behind gold and swords in bogs.

The 'Celtic cowboys' is a theory used to explain the lack of permanent settlements during the Irish Iron Age. It suggests that the population may have been highly mobile, moving frequently with their herds rather than building long-lasting farmsteads. This nomadic lifestyle would account for the thin archaeological record, though modern researchers also debate whether we have simply been looking for the wrong clues when trying to identify their homes and daily activities.

Our understanding has shifted significantly due to new archaeological discoveries over the last thirty years. Up until 1994, there was almost no evidence of Iron Age living sites, but recent excavations have increased the number of known sites from just a handful to over two hundred. While this is still a small number for an eight-hundred-year period, it represents a major breakthrough in solving the mystery of how people lived between 800 BC and 400 AD.
