The Book of Documents (Chinese: 書經; pinyin: Shūjīng; Wade–Giles: Shu King) or the Classic of History

The Book of Documents, also known as the Shujing or the Classic of History, is one of the foundational Five Classics of Chinese literature. It serves as a compilation of rhetorical prose attributed to the figures of ancient Chinese history. This influential work provides deep insights into early political philosophy and the origins of Confucianism, making it essential for understanding traditional Chinese culture and governance.
The Shujing is known by several names depending on the translation and transliteration system used. It is commonly referred to in English as the Book of Documents or the Classic of History. In older texts using the Wade–Giles system, it is often called the Shu King. Regardless of the name, it remains a primary source for studying the historical and philosophical foundations of ancient China.
The Classic of History is vital to Confucianism because it documents the deeds and speeches of legendary sage-kings whom Confucius admired. By preserving these records of ancient Chinese history, the text establishes the moral and ethical standards for leadership and social order. It has been studied for centuries as a guide for virtuous rule and remains a central pillar of the Chinese Classics and Confucian thought.
