Learn the engine-first method for RC aircraft design. Discover how choosing your motor first dictates wing area, chord, and fuselage scale for scratch building.

The engine is actually the determining factor for the entire design. You pick your power plant first, and that choice dictates your wing area, which then dictates your chord, which then sets the scale for the fuselage and the tail.

The engine-first method is a design approach where the motor serves as the primary determining factor for the entire aircraft. Instead of starting with the wings or fuselage, builders select their power plant first to establish the scale of the project. This choice creates a cascading effect, where the engine's power dictates the necessary wing area, which then determines the chord length and the overall dimensions of the fuselage and tail.
Selecting a specific engine size provides immediate design parameters for the wing area to ensure stable flight. For example, using a standard .40 size glow engine typically requires a wing area between 500 and 700 square inches. If the wing is too small for the engine's power, such as a 200-inch wing, the aircraft may become difficult to control and prone to stalling during maneuvers like using the elevator.
Starting with the engine simplifies the complex puzzle of scratch building by providing a fixed starting point for all other variables. Because wingspan, weight, and fuselage dimensions are all interdependent, using the motor as a ruler helps maintain the correct proportions. This method ensures that the 'sails' of the plane are properly sized to the strength of the 'wind' created by the motor, leading to a more successful and flight-worthy design.
