On February 4, 1794, the National Convention officially decreed the end of slavery across the French colonies. This historic turning point granted French citizenship and full constitutional rights to every man living in the colonies, regardless of their skin color. The event was celebrated in Paris at the Temple of Reason, formerly the Notre Dame Cathedral, marking a peak moment of universalist and multiracial equality during the revolution.
The delegation from Saint-Domingue, modern-day Haiti, was a tricolor trio that represented the revolutionary ideal of equality.
