Discover Enheduanna, the High Priestess of Ur and daughter of Sargon of Akkad, who became the first named author in history by inventing the authorial I.

Enheduanna didn't just write; she spoke in the first person, saying 'I am Enheduanna,' and in doing so, she invented the concept of the 'authorial I' and became the absolute bedrock of written literature.
Life of Enheduanna

Enheduanna was the High Priestess of the moon god Nanna in the city-state of Ur approximately 4,300 years ago. She is recognized as the first author in human history to sign her name to a piece of creative writing. As the daughter of Sargon of Akkad, she lived during the era of the world’s first true empire and transitioned writing from a simple accounting tool into a medium for personal expression and literature.
The 'authorial I' refers to the revolutionary shift where a writer speaks in the first person to express personal feelings and identity. Before Enheduanna, writing in Ancient Sumer was largely anonymous and used for tracking temple assets or grain. By stating 'I am Enheduanna' in her work, she moved literature away from lists of commodities toward personal reflections on subjects like the goddess of war, effectively inventing the concept of the author.
Despite her foundational role in the history of literature, Enheduanna was lost to history for thousands of years. Her existence and her contributions to Mesopotamian history were not known to the modern world until 1927. This discovery revealed that the bedrock of written literature was established by a woman in the city-state of Ur long before the time of famous figures like Homer or various biblical authors.
Enheduanna transformed writing from a functional tool for accounting into a vehicle for creative and personal expression. While earlier records focused on tracking cows or grain, her work introduced the world to literature that explored complex emotions and religious devotion. As the High Priestess of Nanna, she used her unique position in the Akkadian Empire to establish the very first examples of signed, subjective creative writing in human history.
