This enabled energy production when, where, and in whatever quantities desired. Medicine doubled lifespans. Concrete enabled real roads and high-rises. America's coastlines provide unmatched natural port potential, with more natural port locations than all other continents combined. Uniquely among major powers, the United States has significant populations on two oceanic coasts, allowing access to global trade opportunities without requiring interaction with potential adversaries.

Imperialism requires military power to conquer territories and exploit their resources and populations. Mercantilism restricts imports while forcing exports onto others, often deliberately destroying their production capacity to create dependency.
Both models aim to transfer economic pain from invaders to the invaded-getting a larger slice of a shrinking pie. However, they face a critical problem: "too many guns, not enough boots." Unlike colonial times when Europeans could control vast populations with minimal forces due to technological superiority, today's widespread military technology makes such imperial control far more difficult.
The only countries that might maintain regional empires would need a cultural superiority complex, power projection capabilities, and vast numbers of disposable youth-a combination no nation currently possesses in our demographically collapsing world.

Unlike other products with diverse supply routes, oil flows through concentrated channels over extreme distances, making tankers exceptionally vulnerable to disruption.
The end of reliable, inexpensive oil shipments will impact everyone personally, as modern industrial urban lifestyles require oil that will no longer be available. Without access to the defining materials of an era, civilizations are forgotten by history. Our dependency on industrial materials has grown increasingly complex over time.
Every material has unique uses, especially when combined with others, but all share a critical dependency on Industrial Age technologies for production, shipping, refining, and manufacturing. Throughout history, empires have fought to secure critical materials-Poland became Europe's premier power through a single salt mine, Spain extended its global dominance through Potosi silver, and Chile warred with its neighbors over copper, silver, and nitrates.
The Order removed geographic constraints on materials access, making them global commons, with China becoming the world's largest importer, consumer, and processor of many materials. As parts of the world deindustrialize, their access to industrial materials will disappear, driving global rifts.
Iron ore stands as arguably the most important industrial material, comprising the majority of all steel humans use. China imports more iron ore than the rest of the world combined times three. As globalization ends, countries facing security threats will struggle with steel production.
Cobalt, essential for energy-dense rechargeable batteries that power the green transition, faces severe supply constraints. Over half of usable cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, an unstable nation likely to face collapse in a deglobalized world.
The end of the Order means the end of the free-and-fair global market for industrial materials that has underpinned modern life. Without the Order's stability, access to critical materials will no longer be determined simply by market forces and capital, but by military reach and regional power.

These crops account for about one-quarter of global food production and require specialized equipment from an exceedingly short list of suppliers.
Oil and oil-derived products are critical to all agricultural operations. Without sufficient volumes, the tractors, combines, trucks, trains, terminals, and ships central to food production and transport simply stop functioning. Beyond fuel, oil and natural gas are primary ingredients for pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers-inputs that increased grain output fourfold since the late 1800s.
The coming food crisis will create a stark divide between countries that can maintain production and those that cannot. Only France, the United States, and Canada have sufficiently in-house supply systems to continue current production with minor adjustments. For regions like the Middle East and much of sub-Saharan Africa, there simply won't be enough food.
