When the conference was closed in January 1992, the people responded with massive demonstrations across the country on February 16, carrying Bibles and candles. The Struggle Continues: Congo's Unfinished Liberation

Since 1956, Congolese people have waged a persistent struggle for freedom, development and democratic rights, hoping to improve their lives and secure a better future for their children. This struggle has unfolded across four distinct periods: the fight for independence (1956-60), revolt against the failed post-colonial state (1963-68), opposition to one-party dictatorship (1969-97), and current resistance against both external aggression and new forms of internal dictatorship. Despite ordinary citizens playing crucial roles in resistance against repression, the ultimate objectives remain unachieved due to weaknesses within the democracy movement itself and constraints imposed by the international environment. Throughout Congo's history, external interests have profoundly shaped its politics. The country's strategic central position and immense natural wealth have attracted imperial ambitions and looters of all kinds. The strategic objective since 1884 has remained unchanged: preventing Congo from falling into "the wrong hands" politically while maximizing extraction of its natural wealth. Western powers and international financial institutions have shown insincere support for Congolese democracy, preferring "good governance" that creates favorable investment conditions over genuine democratic processes. By the century's end, the Congolese democracy movement had weakened substantially, unable to achieve the mass mobilization levels of earlier periods. As a movement primarily of working people (peasants, workers, lumpenproletariat, and lower petty bourgeoisie), it failed to produce effective organic national leadership comparable to Southern Africa's democratic movements. With opposition parties banned under Kabila's regime, civil society organizations attempted to fill the leadership void but lacked sufficient capacity. The stark contrast between earlier periods of mobilization and the late 1990s can be explained through hope versus despair. The independence movement, second independence movement, and early 1990s democratization wave all generated tremendous hope. But from 1994 onward, despair prevailed as the transitional framework from the CNS failed and disillusionment with Laurent Kabila set in. Rather than uniting with democratic forces, Kabila imposed his own governance model, entrusting the country's defense to foreign armies rather than building national unity against external aggressors. Congo's story remains one of unfulfilled potential-a nation of extraordinary natural wealth whose people remain among the world's poorest. Yet the persistence of Congolese resistance through more than a century of exploitation offers a powerful testament to the human spirit's resilience. As the author concludes, genuine democracy remains essential not just for peace and security but for increasing people's freedom and capabilities to lead meaningful lives. The struggle that began against Leopold's brutal regime continues today against new forms of exploitation, with the Congolese people still fighting for the right to control their own destiny and resources.
