Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa (1888–1935) fue un poeta y escritor modernista portugués cuya obra maestra publicada póstumamente, El libro del desasosiego, se erige como una de las exploraciones más profundas de la literatura sobre la conciencia y la identidad. Este diario filosófico, escrito a lo largo de dos décadas a través del semi-heterónimo Bernardo Soares, captura temas de soledad existencial, la fragmentación del yo y la naturaleza de la realidad con una profundidad introspectiva notable.

Pessoa pasó la mayor parte de su vida trabajando como traductor comercial en Lisboa mientras revolucionaba la literatura portuguesa mediante la creación de más de 70 heterónimos: personajes literarios plenamente realizados con filosofías, estilos y biografías distintas.

Durante su vida, publicó solo una colección de poesía en portugués, Mensagem (1933), y tres volúmenes de poesía en inglés, aunque murió prácticamente desconocido en 1935. Su enfoque innovador de la identidad y la autoría anticipó la literatura posmoderna, y el crítico literario Harold Bloom lo reconoció más tarde como uno de los apenas 26 escritores que definen los parámetros de la literatura occidental.
