She adapted by performing seated or sometimes hopping dramatically on her "one good foot." Even in illness, Rosetta maintained her characteristic humor and theatricality, turning her disability into part of her performance. Rosetta's last major public appearance came on July 26, 1972, at Lincoln Center, where she shared billing with Marion Williams as part of "Soul at the Center," a twelve-day black arts festival. Despite sparse attendance, Rosetta's performance was powerful. She sang slower, more melancholy versions of classics like "That Old Time Religion" and "Precious Lord," testifying between songs about her amputation and the deaths of her mother and mother-in-law. Following this concert, Tony Heilbut arranged for Rosetta to record a new album with Savoy Records. But tragedy struck when Rosetta suffered a massive stroke on October 8, 1973-the very day the recording session was to take place. She never regained consciousness and died on October 9, 1973.

A Legacy Reclaimed

The absence of a headstone on Rosetta Tharpe's grave symbolized her larger absence from American popular memory for nearly half a century after her death. Though shocking given her status as one of the twentieth century's most fearless musical innovators, this erasure follows a pattern-Bessie Smith was buried in an unmarked grave until 1970, and Zora Neale Hurston suffered a similar fate until the mid-1970s. Yet Rosetta wasn't entirely forgotten. Her loved ones kept her memory alive, people continued growing up with her records, and women who had swayed to "Strange Things Happening Every Day" during the civil rights era passed her music to their children. Musicians performed her songs, scholars documented her achievements, and independent labels lovingly curated anthologies of her work. But these efforts remained largely invisible to the wider public. Rosetta was omitted from "Best Guitarists" lists and white male rock-and-roll mythologies. Even in the gospel world, her flamboyant crossover status relegated her to the margins. In recent decades, musicians have pushed back against these misrepresentations. Following the 2007 publication of Gayle Wald's biography, fans organized a fundraiser at Philadelphia's Keswick Theatre to purchase a headstone for Rosetta. The folk legend Odetta, speaking from a wheelchair, praised Rosetta as "certainly a champion where the guitar is concerned." The proceeds funded a rose-granite monument with an epitaph by Roxie Moore: "She would sing until you cried and then she would sing until you danced for joy. She helped to keep the church alive and the saints rejoicing." Mick Csaky's 2011 documentary "The Godmother of Rock & Roll" brought Rosetta's story to new audiences, but her 2018 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in the "Early Influence" category) marked her most public rehabilitation. At the ceremony, Brittany Howard and Felicia Collins performed "That's All" with Questlove and Paul Shaffer, while giant images of Rosetta were projected behind them. Yet formal accolades are just inflection points, not endpoints. Truly memorializing Rosetta Tharpe requires revising cultural narratives so that a guitar-playing female gospel superstar isn't merely an interesting footnote but a central protagonist in American music history. For this, we need to invent a new story-one that acknowledges how a Black woman from Cotton Plant, Arkansas changed music forever by making her guitar talk.
