Your script portfolio should include four key elements: show concepts with distinctive worlds and sustainable story engines; season arcs that outline your series' trajectory; pilots that introduce your world and characters; and comprehensive TV pitches that summarize your concept. The industry no longer wants spec scripts of existing shows-they want original pilots that demonstrate your creative vision.
When developing your show, focus on creating a unique world that offers viewers insider access to something fascinating-whether it's the New Jersey mob, women's wrestling in the '80s, or the Baltimore drug economy. The best worlds come from three sources: worlds you've lived in (personal experiences), worlds you're passionate about (subjects you research obsessively), or worlds you create (original fantasy or sci-fi realms). Even seemingly ordinary experiences can become compelling TV when explored deeply.
Your "franchise type" is the story engine that generates episodes for years to come. The eight Save the Cat! franchise types include: TRAPPED TOGETHER (characters forced to coexist), BLANK OF THE WEEK (heroes tackle new problems each episode), (WO)MAN WITH A PLAN (heroes pursuing season-long missions), DUDE WITH A PROBLEM (innocent heroes facing external threats), WHYDUNIT (detectives solving mysteries), I'M NO FOOL (underestimated heroes), BUDDY LOVE (evolving relationships), and MAD, MAD WORLD (large-scope stories where the world takes center stage).

Television is fundamentally about character-this is what keeps audiences committed to 10-30 hours of viewing. Every world naturally contains specific character types. A CIA story includes analysts, field agents, tech experts, and enemy spies. The more expertise you have in your world, the more specific your character details can be, transforming archetypes into distinctive individuals.
Beyond the surface setting, your show needs a deeper meaning-a theme that makes your story relevant to viewers and yourself. Unlike feature films where theme might emerge after multiple drafts, TV requires knowing your theme from the beginning. The best starting point is examining how your world speaks to humanity and your own personal connection.
Great TV characters need three key elements: a flaw (personal problem needing fixing), a want (tangible goal they pursue), and a need (life lesson they must learn). Character and theme are inseparable-your hero's internal journey will reflect your larger thematic concerns.
Your hero begins as a flawed person and embarks on a journey of change, following what I call a "broken compass"-the wrong-way GPS stemming from their origin story. Walter White's broken compass is ego-driven from being ousted from a startup he helped create, leading him to make meth rather than accept help. Unlike in movies, TV characters may never fully fix their broken compass-they'll continue struggling with it across multiple seasons.
To make viewers care about potentially unlikable characters, build a "rooting resume"-qualities that create investment. These include being an underdog, caring about others, trying hard to improve, being fun or charming, having relatable struggles, possessing admirable qualities, or excelling at something specific. Walter White's resume includes his vulnerability, family devotion, intelligence, financial struggles, and terminal illness-enough to keep viewers invested despite his increasingly villainous actions.

The DNA of Compelling Stories
All good stories require four essential elements: a HERO who wants something (GOAL), facing someone or something in the way (OBSTACLE or VILLAIN), with consequences if they fail (STAKES). Without these elements, you don't have a viable story-just disconnected scenes or characters. Consider classic tales like The Odyssey, where Odysseus (hero) wants to return home (goal), faces monsters and gods (obstacles), with his kingdom and family's fate hanging in the balance (stakes).
Story goals must be TANGIBLE and external-something audiences can visually track without mind-reading characters. While internal goals like "being happy" are important for character development, they represent the character's NEED rather than their WANT. The tangible goal (want) often stems from the character's broken compass pointing them toward what they think will fulfill their deeper need. For example, in The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby's tangible want is to win Daisy back, but his deeper need is to reclaim his lost identity and prove his worth. In Die Hard, John McClane's visible goal is to stop the terrorists, but his deeper need is to reconcile with his wife.
Writers must be ruthless with their heroes, creating obstacles that are excruciatingly difficult-"a lasagna of agony!" These challenges should test characters physically, intellectually, and spiritually, pushing them to their absolute limits. Weak obstacles lead to weak stories where characters merely shuffle through the narrative. Effective obstacles escalate in difficulty and complexity, forcing characters to grow and adapt. In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo faces increasingly dangerous physical threats, moral temptations, and psychological burdens as he approaches Mount Doom.
Stakes provide the crucial motivation that forces characters to take action despite obstacles. Without meaningful consequences-the "or else" factor-characters would simply avoid difficult challenges. Whether it's literal death or the death of a dream, effective stakes create urgency that compels the hero to act immediately. Stakes can be personal (saving a loved one), professional (preventing career destruction), or global (averting apocalypse). The best stories often layer multiple levels of stakes - in Jaws, Chief Brody must save tourists (professional stakes), protect his family (personal stakes), and preserve his town's future (community stakes).
The key to keeping audiences engaged is creating questions that need answering-particularly "What happens next?" Storytelling is about manipulating the audience's tension through ups and downs, hope and fear, in a carefully structured roller coaster that eventually provides release. This tension management requires strategic revelation of information - knowing when to withhold details to create mystery and when to reveal them for maximum impact. Successful stories plant questions early that pay off later, like breadcrumbs leading through a forest. Breaking Bad masterfully creates this tension by constantly raising the stakes and introducing new complications just as previous problems seem resolved.
Each story beat should either pose a new question or answer an existing one while raising fresh uncertainties. This creates a forward momentum that pulls audiences through the narrative, always wondering how the hero will overcome the next challenge or what price they'll have to pay for their choices.

The Save the Cat! Framework for Television
Most successful stories aren't completely original but rather combine familiar elements in fresh ways. The Save the Cat! genres provide frameworks for understanding story patterns regardless of audience categories. In television specifically, genres apply more to season arcs and individual episodes rather than entire shows, with series often shifting between multiple genres within a single season.
The Save the Cat! beat sheet extracts complete stories through the same process as a writers' room, nagging you until you have a well-paced narrative with character transformation and all necessary story elements. The 15 beats are organized into three acts: Act 1 (Ordinary World - Thesis), Act 2 (Upside-Down World - Antithesis), and Act 3 (Merged World - Synthesis).
Key beats include the Opening Image (hooks audience, establishes tone), Theme Stated (verbalizes what the story is about), Set-Up (shows hero's pre-transformation world), Catalyst (the event that kicks the story into gear), Debate (hero's reaction to the Catalyst), Break Into 2 (hero enters the "upside-down world"), B Story (introduces characters who help the hero learn), Fun & Games (delivers on the "promise of the premise"), Midpoint (raises stakes with false victory or defeat), Bad Guys Close In (internal and external pressure intensifies), All Is Lost (hero hits rock bottom), Dark Night of the Soul (hero mourns their loss), Break Into 3 (hero finds a new path forward), Finale (hero implements what they've learned), and Final Image (shows how far the hero has come).

Before writing your pilot, sketch the high-level beats of Season 1-but keep it brief at 1-2 pages. Focus on the big turning points and where characters end up in the final episode. During traditional "Pitch Season," studios and producers hear verbal pitches for shows that might become pilots. A pitch document (5-10 pages) differs from a show bible (20-100 pages). While bibles serve as reference materials for production teams, pitch documents provide just enough information for executives to grasp your concept over lunch.
An effective pitch document contains seven sections: why you're the right person for this idea, the big concept (including logline, format and genre), tone, world synopsis and franchise type, themes and timeliness, character descriptions, pilot overview, and season trajectory. When crafting your pitch, translate your beat sheets and story engines into natural prose that doesn't reveal the structural mechanics.

Despite all the challenges-the work, the pitching terror-if you're still interested in TV writing, you need to understand there are no simple paths to success. Don't think of networking as a chore-instead, participate in things aligned with your interests. Take classes, join writers' groups, volunteer on indie films. It's not networking-it's getting off the couch and chasing your bliss in ways that connect you with creative people.
Should you move to LA? Eventually, yes-but maybe not yet. TV writing rooms are in LA, and proximity increases your odds of meeting industry people exponentially. But timing matters. You need scripts, craft, and confidence first. Know yourself, be ready, then go kick those doors open when the time is right.
Keep writing pilots, but mix in "making stuff" too. Turn scripts into YouTube series, podcasts, or short-film prototypes. Being a doer separates you from wannabes and builds confidence. Don't wait for TV gods to find you-go do the thing!
