The "Borg outline" moves from general to specific in six steps: 1) Define the LOCK elements; 2) Write back cover copy; 3) Create three-act structure with doorways of no return; 4) Develop character work using a grid; 5) Create detailed act summaries; 6) Write chapter-by-chapter summary lines.

Practical Tools for Plot Mastery

Like Churchill asking Roosevelt for tools to finish the job, writers need practical techniques to strengthen their stories. The golden rule "show, don't tell" reaches readers more powerfully than simply stating emotions. In Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon," instead of telling us Spade dislikes his partner's widow, we see him surreptitiously checking his watch during her crying. From soap operas, learn two valuable plotting techniques: don't resolve anything too soon-raise questions and delay answers to maintain reader interest, and cut away from scenes at cliff-hanger moments to other scenes that also end with cliff-hangers. This perpetual cycle of unresolved tension keeps readers turning pages. Sue Grafton's technique of beginning each writing day with journaling provides a free-form way to talk through plot possibilities. This process generates new material almost every time, allowing characters and situations to develop organically through written conversation with yourself. When your plot bogs down, use Raymond Chandler's technique of sending "some guy with a gun" into the scene. This unexpected element forces characters to react and breaks through writer's block caused by over-planning. The surprise doesn't literally need to involve a gun-it could be a telegram, an alarm, a dog bite, or a firing. Sometimes your novel should start with chapter two. First chapters often contain too much exposition and setup, while second chapters typically feature more action and movement. Try switching your first two chapters or scrapping chapter one entirely, letting necessary exposition emerge naturally later. Because we've had centuries of storytelling across various media, audiences can anticipate hackneyed plot developments from miles away. Your job is to fool them through "unanticipation"-doing the opposite of what readers expect. Make lists of alternatives at major turning points to avoid cliches and create fresh plot developments. While Chekhov famously said that a rifle shown in Act I must be used later in the play, it's more helpful to invert this rule: if you need a crucial plot device later, plant it earlier. When you realize your protagonist needs a specific skill or tool for the climax, establish it earlier in a natural way. A writer's notebook allows you to "write when you're not writing" by organizing information about your novel-in-progress. Divide it into five sections: plot ideas, characters, research materials, plot summary, and questions about anything that comes to mind. This notebook helps you work on your book even when away from the keyboard. Each genre has specific plotting considerations. For mysteries, try working backward from the crime. For thrillers, start by creating a stunning final confrontation. Literary novelists should focus on the final impression and resonance they want to create. Romance plots revolve around keeping lovers apart through various frustrations before their eventual union. Always know your genre's conventions, but add something fresh. By applying these principles and techniques, you'll transform from a struggling writer into a master storyteller, creating plots that captivate readers and keep them coming back for more. The journey isn't easy, but as Bell discovered after wasting ten years believing the Big Lie, writing absolutely can be taught-and you can learn to do it extraordinarily well.
