Embracing the Queer Future: Community and Legacy

Being queer today is dramatically different than it was even half a generation ago, when there were fewer role models and homosexuality was rarely discussed except in relation to AIDS or as a "moral issue." Today, there are famous queer celebrities, political and religious leaders, and abundant information available at your fingertips. This rapid change makes it an exciting time to be queer, with many teens now able to take same-sex dates to prom, come out to parents, and find accepting friends. These freedoms shouldn't be taken for granted-they came through hard-fought battles for visibility and acceptance led by brave individuals who risked everything. While full equality isn't complete, every step of honesty and activism brings us closer. The path forward involves educating yourself about queer history and connecting with the larger LGBTQ+ community to find support, help, and empowerment. The rainbow flag that now flies proudly worldwide was created by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. Seeking a colorful, optimistic symbol to represent gay freedom and diversity, Baker and volunteers hand-dyed and stitched the first rainbow flags for the Gay Freedom Day parade. After Harvey Milk's assassination later that year, the community rallied behind the flag, which became the official emblem of San Francisco's 1979 Gay Pride parade. Today, it stands alongside other symbols as a universal representation of LGBTQ+ identity and pride.
