Orientalism is a style of thought based upon an ontological and epistemological distinction made between 'the Orient' and (most of the time) 'the Occident.'
Orientalism can be discussed and analyzed as the corporate institution for dealing with the Orient—dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by teaching it, settling it, ruling over it: in short, Orientalism as a Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the Orient.
Orientalism is never far from what Denys Hay has called the idea of Europe, a collective notion identifying 'us' Europeans as against all 'those' non-Europeans.
My contention is that without examining Orientalism as a discourse one cannot possibly understand the enormously systematic discipline by which European culture was able to manage—and even produce—the Orient politically, sociologically, militarily, ideologically, scientifically, and imaginatively during the post-Enlightenment period.
Europeans viewed the Orient primarily as their own invention.

Sobre el Autor

Edward W. Said (1935–2003) fue un académico literario, crítico cultural e intelectual público palestino-estadounidense, reconocido por su obra pionera Orientalismo, una crítica fundamental de las representaciones occidentales de Oriente Medio y Asia.

Profesor de literatura comparada en la Universidad de Columbia, Said fusionó su experiencia interdisciplinaria y su vivencia como exiliado palestino para desafiar las narrativas eurocéntricas en la academia, los medios de comunicación y la geopolítica. Su análisis del "orientalismo" como un sistema de poder cultural que justificaba la dominación colonial revolucionó los estudios poscoloniales y sigue siendo fundamental en todas las disciplinas de las humanidades.

Said fue autor de más de 20 libros influyentes que tendieron puentes entre la política y la cultura, incluyendo Cultura e imperialismo (1993), que amplía su crítica a los imperios globales, y La cuestión palestina (1979), una obra fundamental sobre la política de Oriente Medio. Sus memorias, Fuera de lugar (1999), exploran la identidad a través de los contextos árabe y occidental.
