My siblings exemplify distinct ways of crafting priorities: Jeanine balances her biology career with family life; Walter fights for sobriety from prison while maintaining relationships; Richard excels as father and husband while helping troubled children; Leslie serves as a federal judge while maintaining distant friendships; Andrea mentors first-generation college students while chairing committees and writing books. For me, I maintain a spreadsheet of life goals, most on track except for personal relationships. I've faced questions about my single status-some kind, others accusing me of prioritizing professional goals. But I decided years ago to ignore society's arbitrary standards for successful womanhood. Change is disruptive but inevitable, and we're responsible for shaping new power. Our mission is expanding leadership across diverse backgrounds, but we can't do it alone-change needs allies. When Cosmopolitan profiled my gubernatorial bid in 2017, the reporter provocatively opened by discussing my potential presidential run in 2028. Politics 101 says never admit to wanting the presidency, and Republicans called my aspiration "bizarre." When asked, I chose honesty over the code of silence that holds women and people of color back from claiming the right to even think about running for our nation's highest office. When criticism came, something remarkable happened: allies defended me without my asking.
