Characters who display absolute certainty are typically wrong, while those like Pierre who embrace self-doubt and searching honesty come closer to wisdom. Petya Rostov's musical reverie continues, as he conducts an imaginary orchestra in his mind. Each instrument plays "its own part" before merging with others in a solemn, victorious harmony. In his dream-state, Petya commands the music-"Softer now... Fuller now, merrier"-as voices join in, creating a magnificent chorus that fills him with fear and joy. This beautiful fugue, though Petya "had not the slightest idea of what a fugue was," encompasses all of life's diversity: human and natural worlds, battle sounds and incredible calm, sensory specificity and mysterious grandeur. When battle commences at dawn, an excited and exhausted Petya gallops ahead toward gunfire, charging into a cloud of smoke with a jubilant "Hurra-a-h!" In that moment, a bullet pierces his skull, killing him instantly. His death shocks readers who have grown attached to this sweet, plucky fifteen-year-old boy. Yet Tolstoy remains honest to war's brutal reality-this is no "magic kingdom" where inexperienced boys survive charging into gunfire. Petya's death illustrates how each life is but one melody in life's grand concert, beautiful but finite. Though his individual song ends, it reverberates through others, particularly Natasha, who finds her way back to life through the family's shared grief. Natasha's transformation through Petya's death demonstrates Tolstoy's core belief: "Love awoke, and life awoke." Consumed by grief over Prince Andrei, Natasha had been wandering ghostlike through the house, hostile to everyday concerns.
