The lament at the end of Through the Looking-Glass implies that growing up means leaving wonderland behind. While Carroll's work fits into the Socratic tradition of using nonsense to shape moral identity, there's danger in taking nonsense too far. The absurdist literature of Kafka, Gogol, and Ionesco may produce classics, but as works like Kafka's unfinished "The Trial" delve deeper into senseless strife, life and death themselves become almost meaningless.
