David Richo is an American psychotherapist, teacher, and author whose work has long occupied the meeting point of psychology and contemplative spirituality. Trained in psychology and counseling, he earned a BA in psychology from Saint John’s Seminary, an MA in counseling psychology from Fairfield University, and a PhD in clinical psychology from Sierra University. He became a licensed marriage, family, and child counselor in California in 1976, then built a career in practice and teaching across Santa Barbara and San Francisco. Over the years he taught in settings that ranged from Santa Barbara City College and the University of California, Berkeley to Esalen, Spirit Rock, and other retreat and graduate institutions, establishing himself as a guide for readers and students interested in both emotional healing and spiritual maturation.
