These contacts are mostly assigned rather than chosen, but building productive relationships with them requires intentional effort. WorkNet contacts help you complete tasks, increase productivity, navigate bureaucracy, access talent and information, find resources, solve problems, and test ideas. Unlike your WorkNet, your OrgNet is entirely self-created, comprising people from other divisions, departments, and business units within your organization. This network spans internal barriers and hierarchical levels, creating connections far more complex and useful than any organization chart. OrgNet contacts help you contribute on a larger scale, support organizational initiatives, act like a leader, create a safety net against layoffs, stay tuned to the big picture, find career opportunities, and make your skills visible. Many people make the mistake of "quarantining" personal relationships from professional ones, missing opportunities to bring resources and solutions from one Net to another-a practice that savvy networkers leverage to everyone's advantage. To assess your networks, list five or more prime contacts in each Net to identify neglected areas. To showcase your Competence, demonstrate that you have proper credentials, stay at the leading edge of your profession, earn recognition from peers, commit to lifelong learning, get cited as an expert, mentor others, consult and share expertise, publish or speak publicly, do quality work the first time, discuss your processes openly, handle details carefully, and follow through to exceed expectations. Relationships aren't binary (connected or not) as social media might suggest, but develop through Six Stages of Trust. The journey begins with "Accidents"-thousands of random encounters where circumstances bring you together briefly, like conversations with strangers in waiting rooms or on planes. These progress to "Acquaintances" (people you don't see regularly but could find again), who serve as valuable bridges to new circles. "Associates" are those who belong to the same groups as you, creating an implied permission to connect. "Actives" exchange valuable information and resources, while assessing each other's Character and Competence. "Advocates" have developed enough trust to speak well of each other and actively promote one another. Finally, "Allies" serve as your life's board of directors-the few special people you turn to for advice, support, celebration, and confidential conversations. Trust deepens with each stage, reducing the perceived risk of the relationship. Research by Professors Levin, Walter, and Murnighan reveals that reconnecting with dormant contacts (people you haven't spoken with in three years or more) can be surprisingly valuable. To energize interactions, organize conversation openers before events rather than improvising on the spot. Add something unique to conversations, show genuine appreciation for others, lighten conversations with appropriate humor, explore differences rather than just similarities, engage with energy through animated facial expressions and vocal variety, and dig deeper when you hear cliches or "iceberg statements" that hint at something more. When someone asks "What do you do?" or "What's new?", these are prime opportunities to demonstrate your expertise through strategic storytelling that makes you and your organization memorable. Your response to "What do you do?" teaches people about both your character and competence. Most common answers fail: stating your occupation ("I'm an attorney") is Cement-a dead weight conversation-stopper; giving a complex title creates Fog; mentioning your industry ("I'm in real estate") makes you part of the Blob; and identifying your company ("I'm with Disney") wraps you in the Flag without revealing your unique value. Instead of leaving your listener with a blank mental screen, put a vivid picture in their mind. Use the two-sentence Best/Test formula: First, in about 15 words, highlight your most important talent or skill. Second, provide a brief 25-word example (testimonial) showing how you saved the day, served a client, or solved a problem. For example, instead of saying "I'm director of student financial aid in the student affairs division at the University," try "I'm in charge of giving away $32 million a year to students. One scholarship recipient just graduated with honors and came by to say 'Thanks.'" This second approach instantly generates interest and follow-up questions by creating a vivid mental image of your work. When crafting your Best/Test answers, say the right thing (not just something sensational), tell your talent rather than your title, avoid jargon and acronyms, resist wrapping yourself in your organization's reputation, and consider asking a question instead. Your answer should give a specific picture of you succeeding, encourage follow-up questions, and be delivered with genuine enthusiasm rather than arrogance. Storytelling builds trust and relationships by revealing your Character and Competence. Since people rarely witness your professional triumphs firsthand, stories bring your experiences to life, creating emotional connections and making you memorable. They're more convincing than bare facts and can be repeated when others advocate for you. The 5-S formula helps create compelling stories: Segue (a transition sentence that bridges to your story), Situation (setting the scene), SNAFU (the problem or challenge), Solution (how you resolved it), and Significance (why it matters). The formula brings stories to life, making them memorable and engaging. Use energetic tone, gestures and animated facial expressions to enhance your storytelling impact. Sarah's engineering story demonstrates the 5-S formula in action. Her Segue ("I never thought as an engineer I'd spend the day with 100 sixth graders!") introduces her story about coordinating a "Wow! That's Engineering!" day. While teams have fixed positions, predetermined schedules, clear rules and defined winning conditions, collaboration is voluntary, fluid, and relationship-based. Collaborators play multiple roles, address unique problems spontaneously, and work with undefined timeframes and outcomes. Most crucially, collaboration requires trust-making it difficult with Acquaintances and Associates but natural with Actives, Advocates and Allies. Four ways to create value through reaching out include: 1) Be a great connector-actively introduce people across your networks; 2) Make the investment pay off-track networking ROI by documenting benefits against expenditures; 3) Find the "BringBack"-gather valuable information externally to share internally; and 4) Maximize conference value by preparing what you want to get and give, arranging meetings with speakers or experts, splitting up with colleagues to cover more sessions, and planning how to apply what you learn. "Be the change you want to see" is the third principle in action-behave as if you own the organization and make it what it is. Creating value through collaborative culture means asking yourself key questions: How can I cut expenses? How can I conserve resources? How can I eliminate redundancies? How can I improve processes? And How can I share what I have? Even without face-to-face interaction, you can develop trusting online relationships by applying the same trust-building strategies that work in person. To build trust online: show up human by expressing feelings in your communications; earn the right before asking for help; keep agreements and deliver on promises; share contacts only after proper vetting; give appropriately without overwhelming; tell concise, meaningful stories; find appropriate humor; show you're listening by referencing previous conversations; be tactful in handling conflicts; and suggest video meetings when possible to warm up relationships.
