Born: November 24, 1938 – Watertown, South Dakota, United States
Spencer Johnson was an American physician-turned author whose work focused on change, leadership, and personal development. He is best known for Who Moved My Cheese? and coauthoring The One Minute Manager. His books sold millions of copies worldwide, were translated widely, and became staples of business and self-help literature.
Spencer Johnson’s career was built on an unusual combination of medical training, psychological interest, and radical simplicity. Born in Watertown, South Dakota, and raised in Los Angeles, he originally expected to become a physician. He earned a psychology degree at the University of Southern California, received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and completed medical clerkships at the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School. An early turning point came when he worked in medical communications and discovered that he could rewrite dense, technical material into language ordinary people could actually use. By the mid-1970s he had moved away from clinical medicine and toward writing, first through children’s books such as the ValueTales series, which framed biography as moral instruction and showed his lasting instinct for teaching through story.
