Nisha J. Tuli came to fiction from a background outside publishing. She trained and worked as a chemical engineer, including a stint with a cement and concrete company that brought her to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she later settled with her family. That earlier professional life became useful material rather than a discarded chapter: she has linked the workplace setting of Not Safe for Work to her own experience as a woman of color in a male-dominated field. She has also said that she writes brown heroines and, in later fantasy work, draws on her Indian heritage as part of the imaginative fabric of her stories.
