Born: July 21, 1956 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Michael Connelly is an American crime novelist and former journalist best known for the Harry Bosch novels and The Lincoln Lawyer. His work focuses on police procedure, legal thrillers, and Los Angeles crime. A bestselling author, he has won major mystery honors, including the Edgar Award, and his books have spawned successful film and television adaptations.
Michael Connelly emerged from journalism rather than from literary institutions. Born in Philadelphia on July 21, 1956, he moved to Florida with his family at age twelve and later attended the University of Florida. There, discovering the novels of Raymond Chandler proved decisive: he shifted toward journalism and creative writing, studying with novelist Harry Crews and setting himself on a path toward crime fiction. After graduating in 1980, he worked the crime beat in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale during the violent years of South Florida’s cocaine wars. A 1986 feature on airline-crash survivors helped make him a Pulitzer finalist and led to a job at the Los Angeles Times, bringing him to the city that would become the central landscape of his fiction.
