Lance Dodes is an American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst whose work focuses on addiction, compulsive behavior, and criticism of conventional treatment models. He is the author of The Heart of Addiction and Breaking Addiction and co-author of The Sober Truth, which questions standard 12-step and rehab approaches.
Lance Dodes is an American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst whose professional life unfolded through elite medical training and a long institutional career in addiction treatment. Public biographical records place him at Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School before he completed his M.D. at Harvard Medical School in 1970. He later became an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard, while also directing the substance abuse treatment unit at McLean Hospital, the alcoholism treatment unit at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Boston Center for Problem Gambling. Those posts gave him a broad view of both substance use and behavioral compulsions, and they also set up the central turn in his career: he became a clinician willing to question some of the addiction field’s most entrenched assumptions.
