Kristin Hannah is an American novelist known for historical and contemporary fiction centered on family, resilience, and women’s lives. Her best-known books include The Nightingale, Firefly Lane, and The Four Winds. A frequent bestseller, she has sold millions of books worldwide, and Firefly Lane was adapted into a Netflix series.
Kristin Hannah grew up between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, the region her family settled in after a 1968 road trip that she has often described as formative. She earned a B.A. in communication from the University of Washington in 1983, then attended law school at the University of Puget Sound and worked as an attorney. The decisive turn came during her third year of law school, when her mother, dying of breast cancer, urged her to become a writer and collaborated with her on an early novel at the hospital bedside. After her mother’s death, Hannah set the manuscript aside, returned to it during pregnancy bed rest, and gradually shifted from law to fiction. Her first published novel, A Handful of Heaven, appeared in 1991, beginning a steady professional writing life rather than a sudden debut splash.
