Kiera Cass is an American writer of young adult fiction whose career took shape through persistence, self-direction, and a close relationship with readers. She grew up in South Carolina, later graduated from Radford University with a B.S. in history, and has said that history appealed to her because it was, in effect, the study of real stories. Before her mainstream breakthrough, she first tried to place The Siren through agents, then self-published it in July 2009 after roughly 70 unsuccessful queries. In that early period, she relied heavily on online tools she could control, including YouTube, Twitter, and direct interaction with an emerging fan base, using the internet not just to promote her work but to help create the audience for it.
