John Gottman is an American psychologist and relationship researcher known for decades of work on marriage, divorce prediction, and emotional communication. He co-founded The Gottman Institute and coauthored The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. His longitudinal studies and concepts such as the “Four Horsemen” have strongly influenced couples therapy worldwide.
John Gottman built his career from an unusual foundation: mathematics first, relationship science second. Raised in Brooklyn, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics at Fairleigh Dickinson University, a master’s in mathematics at MIT in 1964, and then turned toward clinical psychology at the University of Wisconsin, where he completed further graduate study and his doctorate. That shift from equations to human behavior became the defining turn of his life. Beginning in the 1970s he systematically observed couples in the lab, and in 1986, at the University of Washington, he helped create the apartment laboratory later known as the Love Lab. There he and his collaborators tracked conversation, emotion, and physiology, establishing the research program that made him a leading psychologist of marriage, divorce prediction, and long-term relational stability.
