Jim Clifton is an American business leader and writer focused on management, workplace performance, entrepreneurship, and wellbeing. As chairman and CEO of Gallup, he has helped shape global conversation around public opinion and employee engagement. His notable books include The Coming Jobs War, Born to Build, and Wellbeing at Work.
Jim Clifton’s career emerged from a Nebraska setting shaped by research, education, and entrepreneurship. He is the son of psychologist Donald O. Clifton, the founder of Selection Research, Inc., and he came through college as a University of Nebraska-Lincoln alumnus while discovering, in practical rather than purely academic ways, the power of asking people good questions. He later recalled working as a student interviewer at an Interstate 80 rest stop and at a youth development center, experiences that persuaded him that careful interviewing could influence real decisions. In 1977 he began his business career in Lincoln with a small marketing-research venture backed by a $5,000 loan. After SRI acquired the Gallup Organization in 1988, Clifton became the leader of the combined enterprise and remained Gallup’s CEO until 2022, expanding it from a predominantly U.S.-based firm into a global organization with offices across 20 countries and regions.
