Jennifer Niven is an American author whose fiction and nonfiction often explore mental health, grief, love, and resilience. She is best known for the young adult novels All the Bright Places and Holding Up the Universe; All the Bright Places became an international bestseller and was adapted into a Netflix film.
Jennifer Niven built her writing life from an early immersion in books, storytelling, and literary discipline. Born in North Carolina and raised largely in Indiana, she grew up in a household shaped by education; both of her parents worked in that world, and her mother, Penelope Niven, became an important authorial model. As a child, Jennifer wrote alongside her mother, and that routine helped turn reading and writing into daily practice rather than occasional ambition. In college she expected to study English and worked on the college newspaper, but after graduation she moved more decisively toward narrative craft by studying screenwriting at the American Film Institute.
