James N. Frey is an American novelist and creative-writing teacher known for practical guides to fiction craft, especially the internationally bestselling How to Write a Damn Good Novel and How to Write a Damn Good Novel II. He has also written nine novels, including Edgar Award nominee The Long Way to Die.
James Norbert Frey, born in Syracuse, New York, on March 15, 1943, built his career in two overlapping phases: first as a novelist, then as a widely read teacher of fiction craft. Public biographies credit him with nine novels and note titles such as The Elixir, U.S.S.A., The Long Way to Die, and Winter of the Wolves. The Long Way to Die was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America, and Winter of the Wolves became a Literary Guild Selection.
