Born: February 02, 1882 – Rathgar, County Dublin, Ireland
James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, and poet whose work reshaped modernist literature through linguistic experimentation and stream-of-consciousness narration. His major works include Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake. Ulysses, especially, became a landmark of twentieth-century fiction.
James Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882 into a large, unstable middle-class family whose declining finances shaped his early sense of social fragility and memory. Educated first at the Jesuit schools Clongowes Wood College and Belvedere College, and later at University College Dublin, he absorbed classical languages, scholastic argument, and a disciplined attention to style even as he grew skeptical of religious and political orthodoxies. One of the defining turning points of his life came in 1904, when he left Ireland with Nora Barnacle, the woman who became his lifelong partner, beginning an expatriate life that took him to Trieste, Zurich, and Paris. Distance from Dublin did not loosen his attachment to it; instead, exile became the condition from which he reconstructed the city in prose of increasing technical ambition.
