Gene Kim is a researcher, author, and former CTO best known for his work on IT operations, DevOps, and high-performing technology organizations. As co-author of influential books including The Phoenix Project, The DevOps Handbook, Accelerate, and The Unicorn Project, and as founder of Tripwire, his research has helped shape modern IT practices worldwide.

Biography & Author's Journey

Gene Kim’s journey from precocious technologist to renowned author and organizational theorist began in his formative years as a student at Purdue University. There, he collaborated with Dr. Gene Spafford to develop Tripwire, a foundational open source tool for intrusion detection in Unix systems. This experience not only cemented his technical acumen but also propelled him into the entrepreneurial sphere; in 1997, Kim co-founded Tripwire, Inc., serving as CTO for thirteen years and guiding the company through significant growth and industry recognition. His time at Tripwire offered front-line perspective into the intricacies of IT operations and fueled a lifelong curiosity about what distinguishes exceptional technology organizations.
