David M. Buss is an evolutionary psychologist whose work examines human mating, sexual conflict, jealousy, and aggression. He is best known for The Evolution of Desire and other books applying evolutionary theory to intimate relationships. A professor at the University of Texas at Austin, he is widely cited for cross-cultural research on mate preferences.
David M. Buss built his career out of a dissatisfaction with piecemeal explanations of human behavior. As an undergraduate psychology major at the University of Texas at Austin from 1971 to 1976, he found many prevailing theories too arbitrary, and geology and astronomy courses sharpened his interest in origin-based explanations. That curiosity led him toward evolutionary theory and then to doctoral study in personality psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1981. Early appointments at Harvard and the University of Michigan, followed by his long tenure at the University of Texas at Austin, gave him the academic base from which his most influential work emerged.
