Dalai Lama XIV

Born: July 06, 1935 – Taktser, Amdo, Tibet

The 14th Dalai Lama is a Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader and prolific author whose writings explore compassion, ethics, meditation, and the relationship between science and religion. His notable books include Freedom in Exile and The Art of Happiness. Awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, he has shaped global conversations on nonviolence and interfaith understanding.

Biography & Author's Journey

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, was born Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, in Taktser, Amdo, to a farming family. Recognized at age two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he entered monastic life early and began formal study at six in a Nalanda-derived curriculum that combined philosophy, logic, grammar, medicine, arts, and debate. He completed the rigorous Geshe Lharampa degree in 1959, broadly comparable to the highest doctorate in Buddhist philosophy. Before that education had fully matured, history overtook him: after China’s 1950 invasion of Tibet, he assumed full political authority at fifteen, and after the 1959 Lhasa uprising he escaped into exile in India, eventually making Dharamsala his base.
