Charles W. Colson was an American political aide, evangelical Christian leader, and author whose work centered on faith, public life, and prison reform. A former Nixon counsel turned Watergate felon, he founded Prison Fellowship and wrote Born Again. He received the 1993 Templeton Prize and became a major voice in Christian apologetics.
Charles W. Colson, widely known as Chuck Colson, was born in Boston in 1931 and came of age with a strong interest in public life, law, and national service. He studied at Brown University, later earned a law degree from George Washington University, and also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Before he became known as a religious author, he built his reputation in Washington as a forceful political operator. That rise culminated in his role as special counsel to President Richard Nixon, where he was regarded as one of the administration’s toughest and most combative aides. The collapse of Nixon’s presidency during Watergate marked the central rupture of Colson’s life and career.
