Angela Y. Davis is an American philosopher, historian, activist, and author whose work examines race, gender, class, abolition, and the prison-industrial complex. Her notable books include Women, Race, & Class, Are Prisons Obsolete?, and Freedom Is a Constant Struggle. A longtime professor, she has shaped academic and public debates on justice.
Angela Y. Davis was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on January 26, 1944, and came of age in the violence and discipline of Jim Crow. Raised in a politically engaged Black family in the area known as “Dynamite Hill,” she learned early how racism operated both as law and as daily threat. A scholarship took her to progressive schools in New York, then to Brandeis University, where she studied French and spent time in Europe. Graduate study in Frankfurt, San Diego, and Berlin deepened her engagement with philosophy, Marxism, and critical theory, especially through figures such as Herbert Marcuse. The 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, which killed four girls she knew, was among the decisive events that turned intellectual study into political commitment.
