Nato: January 06, 1915 – Chislehurst, Kent, England
Alan W. Watts was a British-born writer, speaker, and interpreter of comparative religion who introduced Zen, Taoism, and Vedanta to broad Western audiences. Best known for The Way of Zen and The Wisdom of Insecurity, he published more than 25 books and became a lasting influence on popular spirituality and philosophy.
Alan W. Watts, born Alan Wilson Watts in Chislehurst, Kent, on January 6, 1915, emerged from an English childhood shaped by curiosity, religious questioning, and early exposure to Chinese and Japanese art brought home by missionaries known to his mother. He attended King’s School in Canterbury, but after failing to secure an Oxford scholarship, he pursued his education independently through the Buddhist Lodge in London, where he became editor of The Middle Way while still a teenager. That self-directed path proved decisive. After moving to the United States in 1938 to study Zen, he later earned a master’s degree in theology from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 1945 and was ordained as an Episcopal priest. His departure from the ministry in 1950 marked a major turning point: he moved to San Francisco, joined the American Academy of Asian Studies, and began the work that would define him as an interpreter of Asian religious and philosophical traditions for Western readers.
