    Social pragmatics refers to the invisible threads that hold a conversation together, such as knowing when it is your turn to speak or interpreting non-verbal cues like a raised eyebrow. After a traumatic brain injury (TBI), these rules can change, making it feel like the social Wi-Fi in the brain is spotty. This shift affects how individuals connect with others, as the brain may struggle to process the subtle nuances of human interaction.

    Social communication after TBI involves a high cognitive load because the brain must work overtime to process interactions that used to be automatic. Over seventy percent of people with a severe TBI experience some form of communication disability, which can lead to significant exhaustion during simple activities like a dinner conversation. This fatigue occurs because the brain is struggling to keep up with the pace and complexity of social exchanges.

    Common challenges include verbosity, which is the tendency to talk much longer than intended, and difficulty catching jokes that others find funny. Individuals may also struggle with the timing of a conversation, such as missing the half-second of silence before a laugh. These issues are part of a broader communication disability that affects how survivors navigate life and maintain connections with those around them during their TBI recovery.
