Charles Dickens

出生: February 07, 1812 – Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

Charles Dickens was an English novelist and social critic whose works, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities, explored poverty, social injustice, and Victorian life. His vivid characters and storytelling made him the most famous celebrity author of his era, with enduring global influence and widespread adaptations across media.

传记与作者历程

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1812, into a family that struggled with persistent financial insecurity. His childhood was marked by a formative trauma when his father was imprisoned for debt, forcing young Charles to leave school and work ten-hour days at a blacking warehouse to support his family. Though the experience was deeply scarring, it furnished Dickens with firsthand insight into the hardships of the poor—a theme that would become central to his literary achievement. Following his family’s return to solvency, Dickens resumed his education and soon after emerged as an industrious reporter, honing his skills through parliamentary journalism and early short fiction.
